What does it mean to be a Rotarian?

If you ask 10 different Rotarians you are likely to hear 10 different answers, but all 10 will likely include the motto of Rotary – “Service Above Self.” Rotary encourages and fosters the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise in 4 particular ways.

  • The first is through the development of acquaintance as an opportunity of service. Networking and fellowship with other Rotarians is an important means of encouraging the ideal of service.
  • Second, Rotary recognizes high ethical standards in business and professions, recognizes the worth of all useful occupations, and dignifies each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity for service. Vocational service is an important part of being a Rotarian. We can all serve our communities through our businesses and professions.
  • The third object of Rotary is found when Rotarians apply the ideal of service to their own lives, be it personal, business or community.
  • The fourth object of Rotary focuses on international service. As an international organization Rotary recognizes the importance of service in our own back yard, as well as across the world.

Rotary seeks to advance international understanding, goodwill and peace through its world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service. These objects of Rotary are embraced by Rotarians all over the world, which is why Rotary is a worldwide organization of business and professional men and women united in the goal of Service Above Self.
