Honoring Our Veterans

The Rotary Club of Griffin Veteran's Committee plans a program during the week of Veteran's Day, November 11, to honor Rotarians who have served or serving in the military. Chair Rita Cavanaugh and her committee pick a theme each year. The theme for this year was "The Flags of the United States of America." Rotarian Dr. Phillip Smith, a Vietnam veteran who passed away on June 30, 2023, was also honored. The program consisted of readings about the "Meaning of the Pledge to the Flag", "Meaning of the Colors of the Flag", "I am the Flag of the United States of America", "How Old Glory Got Her Name", "The American Flag", "Birth of the 50 Star Flag" and "Freedom Bridge." The members of Boy Scouts of America Troop 2 posted the American Flag, flags of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force and Coast Guard. Dr. Smith was award the Silver Star, the third highest military combat decoration that can be awarded to a member of the United States Armed Forces, for "gallantry in action in connection with military operations involving conflict with and armed hostile force" in 1971. In addition to Dr. Smith being honored, all veterans who are members of the Rotary Club of Griffin and Rotary Club of Griffin Daybreak were recognized as well as which branch of the military they serve in.
